Decimal vs Binary Comparison

1 GB (decimal) = 0.931322574615 GiB (binary)
1 GiB (binary) = N/A GB (decimal)

The difference becomes more significant with larger sizes.

Unit Standards

Decimal (SI)

Used by hard drive manufacturers and operating systems for file sizes. Based on powers of 1000.

1 KB = 1,000 bytes

Binary (IEC)

Used by RAM manufacturers and some applications. Based on powers of 1024.

1 KiB = 1,024 bytes

Why the Difference?

Computers use binary (base 2), so 1024 (2^10) is more natural than 1000. However, decimal is easier for marketing.
